Outside of my immediate family and a hand full of friends, Coach Raff was the most significant influence on the outlook and values attained thru my teenage years. No teachers, professors or other coaches even came close. Continue reading Jeff Lewis – Holly Harrier Class of 1978

Larry Davidson – Holly Harrier Class of 1978
I remember going to see my older sister run track at Holly High School. There was always this guy running around the football field yelling at the Holly athletes as they participated in various events. To be honest, he kind of scared me. All too soon I found out who he was and why he was yelling. His name was Coach Raffin or Raff, and he yelled because he liked to scare people, at least that’s what I thought. I was only 12 years old at the time, but it wasn’t long before Raff was standing in our family’s living room trying to convince my mom and dad as to why their soon to be freshman should be going to cross country camp. He didn’t yell, and he didn’t win, both highly unusual occurrences. Continue reading Larry Davidson – Holly Harrier Class of 1978
John Buckley – Holly Harrier Class of 1978
By the time I got to Holly High School, Duane Raffin was already a legend. A state title in track under his belt and almost yearly Flint Metro League championship titles in cross country and track. He was also a sage, although we were too young to know it at the time. As the years went by, the memories have faded a little, but the lessons remained firm in our minds and matured within us as we became adults and parents. We were too young then to absorb all of his wisdom or recognize all of his psychological ploys, but young enough to believe and to dream. “Coach Raff” knew that, too, and he used enthusiasm to drive us all to fulfill our potential. Bill Ballard – A Letter to Coach Raffin
Dear Coach Raffin:
I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t been well lately. I hope you feel better soon.
I wrote this letter to say thank you for being my coach and for changing the course of my life. Throughout my adult life, I’ve applied the lessons I learned on the track, perseverance, patience, teamwork, compassion, and enthusiasm, to difficult situations. Without having the lessons I learned under your guidance, I would not have been prepared to deal with difficult situations as an adult. Thank you. Reunion Update
The Reunion held on May 22, 2010 at Holly High School was a huge success. We had over 100 people in attendance, and we raised $10,000 comprised of $5,000 from a match gift announced that evening which prompted one donor to contribute $2,000 and the remaining $3,000 from numerous individuals.
Thanks to everyone for their generous donations and support of the Coach Raffin Scholarship Fund. Go to the Reunion Tab of this site to see pictures from the Reunion.
These gifts bring us closer to our goal of $50,000. You can help by:

Tom Flanigan – Remarks from Reunion
Welcome and Opening Remarks
- Good evening. It is great to see that so many people came tonight to honor Coach Raffin and re-connect with old friends and teammates. My name is Tom Flanigan and I am a graduate of the Class of 1977. As you can see from the program, we are going to start out with Reflections on Raff through the years with a few words from me and then comments from other former athletes starting with the late 1960’s era. John Buckley – Eulogy Given at Dryer Funeral Home
When I ran for Raff from 1975-1977, he would tell us that it takes 128 muscles to frown and only 11 to smile. That’s 117 wasted muscle contractions. So smile. And he would smile. And as we ran, we would smile. Continue reading John Buckley – Eulogy Given at Dryer Funeral Home

Message FromCoach Raffin
It is an honor to have a scholarship in my name proposed by the former track and field and cross country athletes of Holly, where I enjoyed over 38 years of teaching and coaching. I am very humbled by the efforts being undertaken for this scholarship fund.
Since my retirement from teaching at Holly High School, I have been teaching for 18 years at the community college – Oakland Community College and Mott Community College – in the English departments, mainly teaching English 101. My wife, Jeanne, and I spend two months of the year, February and March, in St. Augustine, Florida, right on the Atlantic Ocean.
I stay close to cross country and track and field. I am at most of the big meets either as a fan or an official. The past two years i have been to most of Holly High School’s dual meets, where there are still many fledgling and accomplished athletes. I attend the NCAA Indoor Track and Field championship yearly with a group of twenty or more, mostly former high school coaches of Michigan. This past March we were at College Station, Texas, the home of Texas A&M. Last summer I attended the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, with fifty other track nuts of Michigan. Included in that group was our former manager, Mark Corless, who is now an athletic director at a school in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area. I have attended every Olympic Trial since 1988. Last fall I was at the NCAA cross country championship in Indiana.
Yes, I still love cross country and track, and am grateful for all the memories many of the former athletes blessed me with. How was I so lucky to have found cross country and track and Holly, Michigan?
